Tesla vehicles (Model S, Model X, Model 3, and Model Y) are equipped with an event data recorder (EDR) that records data related to vehicle dynamics and safety systems when the system detects an accident or an accident-like situation. The resulting data is stored in the Restraints Control Module (RCM). Tesla provides free open source software that can be used to access and retrieve EDR data and also provides a free online service that generates a PDF report based on the data received.

The Airbag Control Module or ACM, also known as an Event Data Recorder or EDR, was originally designed to determine if the crash was significant enough to warrant deployment of the airbags. The other computer that is now common in modern vehicles is the Infotainment System. This is the traditionally in-dash-mounted screen that one can utilize for directions, cell phone communications, music, and a host of other information. As many people connect their cell phones to this device, the information available can include past GPS data, travel routes taken by the driver, media, connected devices, calls made, and other cell phone-specific data.

Berla is the forensic software that is utilized to make sense of the 1s and 0s downloaded off the car's infotainment system. Berla has an app which can be downloaded on your mobile phone and will provide information to identify vehicle systems and determine what information is available. You will need to create an account with Berla to access the app.
